Tech for Good: Lessons from the Field on Bridging the Digital Divide

Let’s be clear, the digital divide is still alive and deep. From rural villages to underserved urban communities, access to technology, skills, and opportunity remains uneven. But at Eight Tech Consults, we don’t just talk about the gap , we work every day to close it.
Through our digital skilling initiatives across Uganda, we’ve witnessed first_hand how the right tools, training, and support can change lives, not in theory, but in real, tangible ways.

From Fields to Screens: Empowering Farmers with Digital Tools

In the heart of rural Uganda, where farming is a way of life, we’ve trained over 3,000 farmers on how to use mobile platforms for weather updates, market prices, and crop management. Many had never touched a smartphone before. Today, they’re accessing digital finance tools, improving yield forecasting, and even teaching others in their cooperatives. For them, tech isn’t a luxury , it’s a new way to sustain their families.

Skills for Everyone: Training Persons with Disabilities (PWDs)

We believe inclusion isn’t optional. Over the past three years, in partnership with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF), and National Union for Persons with Disabilities ( NUDIPU), we’ve:
•Trained over 40,000 persons with disabilities.
•In our July 2025 digital literacy initiative alone, we delivered training to 980 persons with disabilities in 28 districts across all regions of the country.

We’ve Made Progress, But the Work Is Far From Over

For every success story, there’s a reminder of the work ahead , remote schools with no devices, learners forced to share a single phone, or connectivity so poor that learning stalls before it starts. The digital divide isn’t just about access; it’s about inclusion, affordability, relevance, and dignity.

So, What Have We Learned?

That digital skilling must be inclusive, localized, and rooted in real-world impact. That it’s not about how much tech we deliver, but how many people we empower. That closing the digital divide isn’t a one-off project, it’s a long-term commitment.
What’s Next? Collaboration. Scale. Action.

At Eight Tech Consults, we’re not slowing down. But we know we can’t do it alone. We’re calling on:
•Partners: We’ve worked closely with Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda (NUDIPU), the Cyber School Technology Solutions and the Mastercard Foundation for higher education initiatives, and the Universal Communications Service Access Fund (UCUSAF).
•Policymakers: To prioritize inclusive digital ecosystems.
•Communities: To own and grow the change.

Because for us, “Tech for Good” isn’t a campaign, it’s a journey. One that leads to more farmers earning better, more youth finding jobs, and more communities rising with confidence in a digital world.

Let’s keep building that future, together.
